ScienceDaily (Dec. 28, 2007) — The loss of deep-sea species poses a severe threat to the future of the oceans, suggests a new report publishing early online on December 27th and in the January 8th issue of Current Biology, a publication of Cell Press. In a global-scale study, the researchers found some of the first evidence that the health of the deep sea, as measured by the rate of critical ecosystem processes, increases exponentially with the diversity of species living there.

Seriously... this is a matter of great concern. We tend to take the marine life for granted but this study has really come as an eye opener.

Global Warming petition from INDIA

If you're in India and are concerned about Global Warming... please take time out to sign this petition. One signature can make a difference. YOU can make a difference:-

Online petition - Campaign Against Climate Change, India

The Kyoto Protocol is a protocol to the international Framework Convention on Climate Change with the objective of reducing Greenhouse gases that cause climate change. It was agreed on 11 December 1997 at the 3rd Conference of the Parties to the treaty when they met in Kyoto, and entered into force on 16 February 2005.

As of November 2007, 174 parties have ratified the protocol. Of these, 36 developed countries (plus the EU as a party in its own right) are required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the levels specified for each of them in the treaty (representing over 61.6% of emissions from Annex I countries) [1] [2], with three more countries intending to participate[3]. One hundred and thirty-seven (137) developing countries have ratified the protocol, including Brazil, China and India, but have no obligation beyond monitoring and reporting emissions.

Following Canada's lead, the US will now be phasing out inefficient incandescent lights bulbs in favour of compact fluorescents by 2012. This is a welcome news since it will surely help reduce Global warming to an extent...

What is the Greenhouse effect?

We receive light and heat from the sun. It should be noted that one third of the rays of the sun are reflected back to the universe and only two third of the rays are actually absorbed by the Earth which warms the land. Much of this heat is radiated out into space and some of it is stored in the atmosphere. This is called the Greenhouse effect. This effect makes life on Earth possible. Without it, the Earth's temperature would've been too chilling for us to survive. "Global warming" refers to the rise in the Earth's temperature resulting from an increase in heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere.
Two major sources which contribute to Global Warming:- Use of fossil fuels and Deforestation.

Schools should do their bit...

Now that all of us should do our bit to save the planet... let us think of ways and means of mass involvement and education about Global warming. Schools and other education institutions can help strengthen fight against this threat which would at some point of time eradicate life on earth if not attended to as early as possible. Children in schools should be provided an assignment to do on Global warming after explaining to them their causes and consequences. The parents should be asked to get involved as well. This will induce students and parents to study and understand global warming and even if 20% of these people take this issue seriously, it'll help a lot.

If you have any other simple way by which such awareness can be spread, drop in your comments...

Do we have only 5 yrs to live?

(contributed by our reader)

I watched a programme on a local Indian news channel India TV and they said that according to a NASA scientist, by 2012, all the ice in the Arctic belt will melt and major cities like Mumbai, New York, Kolkatta and all those which are perched near the seas will sink! Previously predicted to melt by 2040, now they're saying it'll melt in 2012!

It's high time nations like the USA and other developed nations woke up and curtailed emissions of harmful gases in the atmosphere. We too can make a difference. This problem, which was sidelined and ignored so far has taken a dangerous turn.

How can you help stop Global Warming?

* Plant trees:- By planting more and more trees and looking after forests, you can do your bit to save our planet. Trees emit oxygen and take in carbon dioxide which is one of the reasons through which global warming happens.

* Save Energy:- Switch off electrical appliances when not needed. Also, turn off the water tap when not in use. This will save a lot of energy... and your money too! Buy energy efficient appliances.

* Travelling issues:- Take public transport whenever possible. Use Cycles or walk when you have a less distance to cover. This will help reduce air pollution.

* Recycle:- By producing new paper or glass from recycled materials, we can save a lot of energy.

* Spread awareness:- Spread awareness around you about this serious problem which would eradicate life on Earth. Educate ignorant people about the problem of Global Warming and try to bring about changes in any way possible.

What is Global Warming?

Global warming is an average increase in the Earth's temperature. Such an increase in the Earth's temperature causes changes in the climatic conditions. Scientists fear that if solutions are not drawn to curb Global Warming, it will pose a serious threat to the lives of those living on the planet. It will cause drastic rise in sea-levels and big cities which are near the sea will sink due to cyclones, tsunamis, earthquakes and other reasons due to Global Warming. Such a rise in sea-level would be due to the melting of ice in oceans and mountains. To save our planet and in turn our own lives, we will have to act... and fast!
